Beach Safety
Enjoyment is what the beach is all about.
The cost is safety, a small price to pay.
Swim between the flags;
Sometimes the water looks better in other spots, the guards have chosen the safest part of the beach and that is the area they watch most closely.
If there is a drift you will find yourself slowly being pushed up or down the coast so you need to keep an eye on the flags as it is easy to slip out if you are not watching.
If the guards see you outside the designated swim area they may gesture to you by holding their arms in an L shape directing you back.
If you need help;
If you think you might need help,
Or if someone close to you needs help,
Raise one arm directly above your head, this is the sign that the guards are looking for. Do not be shy people have drowned because they were too embarrassed to put their hand up early enough. If you have children in your care show them what they must do or even ask the guards to give them a wee bit of schooling on the subject.
SUN
Sun screen and hats are a minimum requirement for staying healthy on the beach, shade clothing and sunglasses should also add to your comfort.
Drink water: on a hot day you should consume a full water bottle every hour or two.
WATER TOYS
Inflatable animals, air beds and anything light can be a risk if there is an off shore wind. At the least your dirigible could be blown away from you and out to sea, at worst you could be taken with it into unsafe water.
Please ask the guards if conditions are safe if you want to take anything into the waves with you.
The Life Guards are there to help so if you have any questions or need help please ask.
