Become a Lifeguard

How do I become a Surf Lifeguard? It’s as easy as 1 2 3.

1. To gain your Surf Lifeguard Award you need to first join a Surf Life Saving Club. You can join with the minimum of skill or experience.

2. You will be taught first aid; resuscitation, practical rescue skills and you must complete a 400m swim within a specified time limit. The Club will provide the training and equipment you need to learn the skills to be ready to sit the examination.

3. The exam tests both practical and theoretical lifesaving knowledge that you will have been taught.  Exams are run throughout the summer so as soon as you are ready, you can put your learning to the test.

Once you have achieved your Surf Lifeguard Award you can become part of your Club’s Lifeguard patrol team and a whole world of opportunities are available to you. You can continue to develop your Lifeguard skills through first aid courses, programmes to continue developing your Lifeguard skills; or learn to drive the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB).

You do have to be interested, prepared to make an effort and commit time.

You start your training at a level that is governed by your age as you can not sit the exam until you are 14. If you are older than 14 your induction will be  governed by your experience and ability to learn. If you are even just wondering what it is all about, if in the deepest recess of your memory you can recall being told to stay between the flags,
